The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated a process to revisit the Kano State Emirate Council Law (2019) and its 2023 amendment.
This move comes after a motion of urgent public importance was presented by the Majority Leader, Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Chediyar ƴan Gurasa, during Tuesday’s plenary session.
The motion, seconded by Shu’aibu Rabi’u, a member representing Dawakin Kudu Constituency, seeks the lawmakers’ approval to amend the aforementioned laws.
The 2019 amendment, passed amidst tensions between former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, saw the historic Kano Emirate fragmented into five separate emirates.
This reorganization, which included the appointment of First Class Emirs for the newly established regions, ultimately led to the dethronement of Emir Sanusi.
The Kano State House of Assembly’s decision to revisit the Emirate Council Law suggests potential changes to the current structure. The nature and extent of these amendments remain to be seen, but the move has sparked public interest in the future of the Kano Emirate system.
