CITAD Launches Robotics, Coding Initiative for Kano Girls Students

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) launched a new program to empower young girls in Kano State with robotics and coding skills.

The initiative, named the Artie Robot and Coding Training Program, will target 30 students in three different public secondary schools during its first phase.

The program’s official launch took place on Thursday at Government Girls Secondary School Dorayi Karama in Kano.

CITAD’s Executive Director, Malam Yunusa Zakari, delivered a speech through Buhari Abba, highlighting the program’s goals.

“This initiative aims to enhance secondary school students’ technological and coding skills, empowering them to pursue careers in the ever-growing field of information technology,” Abba said on Zakari’s behalf.

Zakari further emphasized, “We believe girls have the potential to become future leaders in tech, and this program will equip them with the foundation and confidence they need to succeed.”

CITAD’s Technical Officer for Innovation and Creativity, Mr. Abdulrahman Babatunde, stressed the growing importance of coding and robotics skills for everyone, including young secondary school girls.

“Learning to code is akin to learning a new language,” Babatunde explained. “It opens doors to a vast array of possibilities and empowers you to create and innovate.”

Dr. Kabiru Ado Zakirai, the Executive Secretary of Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board (KSSSMB), commended CITAD for organizing this training.

He acknowledged the historical underrepresentation of women in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). By introducing girls to robotics and coding at an early age, the program can cultivate their passion for these subjects and inspire them to pursue exciting careers in the future.

“This program represents a valuable investment in Kano State’s future,” Dr. Zakirai stated through Malam Umar Yakasai. “Equipping girls with these skills opens doors to new opportunities and fosters a more technologically adept generation.”

He concluded by encouraging the students to actively participate in the program and embrace the exciting world of technology.
