The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has expressed profound gratitude following his reinstatement, attributing his return to the throne to divine intervention.
Speaking at the Government House in Kano on Friday, where he received his letter of appointment from Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, Sanusi reflected on the spiritual significance of his reappointment.
“The Arabians used to say that in everything that we are going to witness, there is a lesson that shows us that God is there. Whatever is happening to an individual is preordained by Allah and to those who are sensible enough, it’s a lesson,” Sanusi remarked. “God is one and whatever He does, nobody can change and what He doesn’t do, nobody can.”
Sanusi, who was dethroned in 2020 following a dispute with former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, emphasized that his reinstatement underscores the omnipotence of God. “We made it clear that God has preordained time and cause for everything and everyone. He gave leadership to whom he wanted and at the time he wanted. When He gives, no one can take it away and when He takes it away, nobody can take it back,” he said.
Reflecting on his initial appointment by former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso in 2014 and his subsequent return, Sanusi noted the historical significance of his reappointment. “My Governor and our assembly members, you will not understand the gravity of what you did for the history of Kano and the country at large,” he said, highlighting the rarity of such an event in over a millennium of Kano’s history.
Sanusi also warned against the fragmentation of emirates in northern Nigeria, pointing out the negative consequences of political interference. “This thing that has been brought to Kano, had it been allowed, one day we will wake up with the Emir of Kumbotso, Bichi, Fagge, and 44 Emirs. So what the government and the assembly did is a rescue mission.”
Governor Abba Yusuf, while presenting the appointment letter, cited Sanusi’s “competence, credibility, and popularity” as the basis for his reappointment. He urged the newly reinstated Emir to uphold the principles of Islamic teachings and work towards uniting the emirate. “By the powers conferred on me by the Kano Emirate Council Law of 1984 and 2024, and supported by the recommendation of the kingmakers; I have the singular pleasure of confirming the reappointment of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and the head of the Kano Emirate Council,” Yusuf declared.
Sanusi’s return marks a significant moment in the history of Kano, with expectations high for his leadership to foster harmony and development in the region.
