Residents of Kano and supporters of the 15th Emir, Aminu Bayero, staged a protest against the dissolution of five emirates created by former governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Mr. Bayero was deposed on Wednesday after Governor Abba Yusuf signed a new law abolishing the Kano emirate under his rulership as well as four other emirates in Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye.

Governor Yusuf reinstated the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi, who was dethroned by Mr. Ganduje in 2020, as the new emir.

The protest erupted after the supporters performed special prayers in favor of Emir Aminu Bayero. Tyres were burnt on the streets while the protesting youths convened on the state roads chanting solidarity songs.

Emir Aminu Bayero has remained at the Nasarawa GRA palace for more than 24 hours amid tight security.
