The Kano South Elders have called on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to urgently reverse the decision on the Kano Emirate Law and restore the previously established emirates. This appeal was made by the Chairman of the Elders Forum, Hon Musa Salihu Doguwa, during a media briefing at the NUJ Secretariat Farm center in Kano.
“We stand here today to shed light on the immense progress and development that the upgrade of the new emirates in southern Kano brought about under the visionary leadership of former Governor Umar Abdullahi Ganduje,” Doguwa stated. He highlighted that this initiative led to significant urban upgrades and infrastructure expansion, ushering in a new era of prosperity and growth.
The new emirates in Kano South—Gaya, Rano, and Karaye—were noted for their rich historical backgrounds and substantial populations. Doguwa emphasized that these areas had previously suffered from a lack of tertiary healthcare and educational institutions, which stalled their development.
“The span of administrative control in each of the emirates had hindered their progress due to marginalization, leading to an over-concentration of social amenities and law enforcement resources in Kano City alone,” he said. “The lack of decentralized development efforts had deprived these emirates of the necessary resources for social and economic growth.”
Doguwa criticized the recent decision by the State Assembly and Governor Yusuf to amend the emirate law, describing it as a significant setback. He praised members of the State Assembly from Gaya, Takai, Doguwa, and Tudun Wada Local Governments for their support of the emirates’ progress and development.
“We urge other members from Kano South Emirates to realign themselves with the path of progress and stand up for the collective development of their people, Kano, and Nigeria,” Doguwa said. He called the removal of the emirs without due process a grave injustice and acknowledged the judicial intervention that has temporarily halted the legislation.
The Kano South Elders are calling on the state government and House of Assembly to uphold the rule of law and restore the emirates to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
