Residents of Jigawa and Yobe States have been plunged into darkness following an incident in which a moving trailer collided with a Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) tower located in Gunduwawa, Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The TCN General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, disclosed this in a statement released on Monday.
According to Mbah, the accident occurred on Sunday, disrupting electricity supply from the Kano–Hadejia 132kV Transmission Line and resulting in the loss of approximately 16.6 megawatts of power.
She mentioned that TCN has already deployed a contractor to begin reconstruction of the damaged tower. The company assured residents that efforts are underway to restore bulk power supply to the affected areas.
“The incident caused the tripping of the line, cutting off supply as the tower collapsed onto the container, impacting a nearby residential building and damaging part of it. Fortunately, no lives were lost. The matter has been reported to the Gezawa Divisional Police,” the statement read.
“Regrettably, this has left several Local Government Areas in Jigawa and Yobe States, including Hadejia, Gumel, Gagarawa, Nguru, Mallammadori, Birniwa, Kafin-Hausa, Auyo, Guri, Kaugama, Taura, Garki, Maigatari, Babura, Kirikasamma, and Machina, in darkness. Currently, there is no alternative source of bulk power supply to two of TCN’s substations, Gagarawa and Hadejia.”
“Until the tower is repaired, power supply to the affected areas will remain unavailable,” the statement concluded.
