Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has expressed profound shock and sympathy over the devastating fire that engulfed several shops at the Kantin Kwari textile market on the night of Saturday, October 5th, 2024.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf extended heartfelt condolences to the affected traders, their families, and the entire Kano community. He described the incident as a significant blow to the state’s economic center, sharing in the grief of those who suffered losses.
“The Kantin Kwari market is a vital pillar of Kano’s economy, and this tragedy affects not just the traders but the entire state,” the Governor remarked, calling for heightened vigilance and stronger safety measures to prevent future disasters.
He emphasized the urgent need for improved precautionary actions to safeguard both lives and property, stressing that securing the market is key to preserving its role as an economic engine for Kano.
The fire, which ignited around 7:00 PM at Gidan Inuwa Mai Mai on Bayajidda Street, spread rapidly to several buildings in the market.
The quick intervention of the Federal Fire Service, Kano State Fire Service, and reinforcements from Sabon Gari, Dawanau, and Singa Markets helped contain the fire, preventing further destruction.
Governor Yusuf praised the courage and swift response of the fire services, private companies, and volunteers involved in fighting the blaze. He also urged all market stakeholders to prioritize safety and implement preventive measures to avoid a repeat of such incidents.
