The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called off its strike and resumed full services at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, following a meeting with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
NMA Chairman, Dr. Abdulrahman Ali, confirmed the suspension of the strike, attributing the decision to the governor’s intervention.
According to Governor Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the resolution came after a productive meeting with the governor, where tensions arising from a misunderstanding between a hospital doctor and a state commissioner were amicably settled.
Dr. Abdulrahman expressed appreciation for the governor’s swift response, noting that it prevented further disruption to essential healthcare services.
He encouraged Kano residents to address any grievances through appropriate channels, assuring them that disputes between patients and healthcare workers would be fairly reviewed and resolved.
Earlier in the week, during a live radio interview, Governor Yusuf had urged the doctors to reconsider their strike, highlighting the potential harm to vulnerable patients, especially pregnant women and children requiring urgent care.
The doctors initiated the strike after an alleged assault on a female colleague by a member of the governor’s cabinet.
