Ummasalma Isyaku Rabi’u is a prominent force for empowerment and transformation in Kano and northern Nigeria, dedicated to driving meaningful change through her vision and heritage. As the daughter of the late Khalifa Isiyaku Rabiu—a respected businessman and Islamic scholar who established a significant holding company in Kano State—she carries forward a legacy of leadership and social responsibility.
Holding the traditional title of Jarumar Kasar Hausa, Ummasalma exemplifies courage, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to societal progress. An active philanthropist and a dedicated member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) youth wing in Kano, northern Nigeria, and across the country, she champions women’s and youth empowerment, promoting literacy and economic independence as vital foundations for freedom and self-reliance.3Guided by a clear vision for social justice, Ummasalma founded the Ummasalma Isiyaku Rabiu (USIR) Foundation. The foundation’s mission is rooted in combating poverty, hunger, and illiteracy while enriching lives through inclusive programs in shelter, education, healthcare, and entrepreneurship.
The USIR Foundation focuses on Nigeria’s most vulnerable populations, addressing the root causes of poverty and inequality. By empowering women and youth, the foundation aims to create pathways to independence, helping individuals break free from cycles of dependency.
Ummasalma believes that poverty is not only a condition but also a barrier that prevents people from living peacefully and productively. In her words, “Poverty is the single most impactful challenge and impediment to the ability of our people to live good lives free from crisis, violence, hatred, conflict, and war.” She argues that competition over limited resources breeds conflict, and that true peace and prosperity can only be achieved by addressing fundamental needs—education, employment, healthcare, and skills development.6The USIR Foundation tackles poverty through a multi-faceted approach. Education is central to its efforts, equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions, contribute to their communities, and select leaders who prioritize communal welfare. In promoting economic opportunities, USIR also addresses the pressing need for employment and skills training, especially among women and youth. These initiatives are designed to enable individuals to take control of their destinies, fulfilling Ummasalma’s vision for a society built on shared prosperity.
The foundation’s work extends into critical areas, including food security, shelter, and healthcare. By providing essential resources to vulnerable communities, USIR ensures that even the most marginalized individuals have a chance to pursue self-sufficiency. This aligns with Ummasalma’s belief that every person should have the opportunity to realize their lifelong goals within a supportive, sustainable society.
On November 3rd, the USIR Foundation took a monumental step in advancing its mission by launching its first Empowerment Initiative, an event held under the auspices of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This initiative embodies the shared vision of “Renewed Hope,” focusing on uplifting widows and artisan youth in Nigeria’s Northwest region.
The empowerment initiative equips 200 beneficiaries with essential tools and resources for economic independence. The USIR Foundation’s distribution included:
– 50 sewing machines, opening doors for women and young artisans to build sustainable businesses in the garment and fashion industry.
– 50 grinding machines, helping streamline food production processes, thereby creating economic opportunities and supporting local food markets.
– 50 generators, providing reliable power sources for small-scale businesses and ensuring that productivity is no longer hampered by the region’s inconsistent electricity supply.
– Cash grants of N50,000 each for 200 individuals, providing capital for their business ideas and entrepreneurial pursuits.
These resources represent more than just tools—they signify a pathway to prosperity. For the women and youth receiving them, these items are transformative, bridging the gap between potential and reality.
By championing inclusivity, Ummasalma Isyaku Rabi’u is setting a powerful example for future generations. The USIR Foundation’s work exemplifies her commitment to societal transformation by addressing poverty and fostering independence. Ummasalma’s belief in addressing root causes drives the foundation’s comprehensive approach to fighting poverty and promoting sustainable development.
Through her leadership, the USIR Foundation continues to inspire hope, supporting vulnerable populations to take control of their futures. Ummasalma’s work demonstrates the transformative power of targeted, mission-driven philanthropy in tackling complex social issues. As the foundation grows, it remains a reflection of her vision for a society where every individual has the means to lead a fulfilling, self-sustaining life.
With her commitment to justice, economic empowerment, and inclusivity, Ummasalma Isyaku Rabi’u is a visionary leader whose work through the USIR Foundation continues to shape the future of northern Nigeria. By investing in people, she is building a legacy that will uplift generations, bridge divides, and foster a society rooted in shared prosperity and sustainable development. Through initiatives like these, Ummasalma and the USIR Foundation are igniting a flame of hope, guiding individuals from dependency to self-reliance and, ultimately, toward a brighter future for all Nigerians.
