The Director General of Media and Communication to Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, has disclosed how he sought refuge in the Kano State Government House to avoid being arrested by police operatives.
Speaking on Saturday during the PR Nigeria Young Communication Fellowship in Kano, Bature Dawakin Tofa claimed that about 40 officers from the Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) monitoring team had been deployed to Kano six days earlier with the sole aim of arresting him.
“For the last five days, I have been in the Government House and could not come out,” he revealed. “The nature of Kano politics is such that there is a fight you can even describe as a federal versus state fight. At some point, I have almost been behind everything of that nature. So, there was this petition against me, and nobody is handling the petition but the IGP himself.”
Bature Dawakin Tofa added that he chose the Government House as a sanctuary because of its constitutional immunity, which prevents arrests on the premises without the governor’s approval. He also shared that he had secured a court order restraining the police from arresting him.
“I came out because of just three things: one, I didn’t think I should miss this event, even if I’m going to be arrested. The second issue is that I have a court order, which I’m sure the police must have seen because it’s viral. And the third one is that I came here well-fortified to resist arrest if it happens,” he said.
Kano Times reported that Sanusi Bature has accused the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, of deploying 46 armed security personnel to arrest him.
Bature Dawakin Tofa alleged that Ganduje’s actions stemmed from reports of the APC chairman’s suspension by his ward executives.
A Kano High Court has restrained the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies from arresting Bature.
