The Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has appointed Dr. Nura Iro Ma’aji, a renowned Governance and Policy Development Specialist with nearly two decades of impactful experience, as the newest Commissioner in his cabinet.
The portfolio assigned to Dr. Ma’aji will be announced soon, reflecting his extensive expertise and contributions to public service.
Dr. Ma’aji’s impressive career spans academia, the private sector, and non-profit organizations, where he has focused on advancing policy design, strategy development, education, anti-corruption, peacebuilding, and democracy. He has been instrumental in creating strategic tools such as performance scorecards, advocacy toolkits, and action plans to improve governance and service delivery.
In his current role as Special Adviser to the Governor on Employment and Job Creation, Dr. Ma’aji has spearheaded initiatives addressing unemployment, fostering economic empowerment across the state. Previously, as Special Adviser on Student Affairs, he managed the welfare and development of over 7.2 million students at various educational levels in Kano State.
Dr. Ma’aji has led various high-impact projects, including policy and legislative advocacy at the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), malaria prevention programs with the World Bank/Nigeria Interfaith Action Association, and economic empowerment schemes under the Dangote Foundation.
His expertise also extends to consulting for global organizations such as UNICEF, USAID, and IPAS, where he has developed monitoring frameworks and accountability mechanisms to improve service delivery. Additionally, Dr. Ma’aji is the founder and director of Annoor Science Academy, a trailblazing educational institution that integrates Nigerian, British, and American curricula.
Dr. Ma’aji’s academic accomplishments include multiple master’s degrees and ongoing doctoral research in Political Science at Bayero University, Kano. A published researcher and mentor, his work has garnered recognition and accolades, including the Nigerian Youth Leadership Award by LEAP Africa.
As the new Commissioner, Dr. Ma’aji is expected to bring his visionary leadership, innovative strategies, and commitment to governance to his new role, further advancing the development agenda of Kano State under the leadership of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf.
