The Africa Health Budget Network (AHBN) has acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for allocating N150 million for the National Cancer Health Fund and N50 million for Childhood Cancer Health Funds in the 2025 proposed budget.
These allocations are part of the budget lines ‘Counterpart Funding for National Cancer Health Fund’ (budget code ERGP25227378) and ‘Counterpart Funding for Childhood Cancer Health Funds’ (budget code ERGP25227404). The funds are viewed as a step forward in the government’s efforts to improve cancer care and prevention.
During a joint sitting of the Senate and House of Representatives on Wednesday, President Tinubu presented a proposed budget of N47.960 trillion, with the health sector receiving N2.48 trillion. The AHBN expressed its belief that the allocation will address vital areas such as maternal healthcare, infectious disease control, and cancer care.
In a statement signed by AHBN’s Founder and Coordinator, Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba, the network acknowledged the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate; the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako; and the Director General of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), Professor Usman Malami Aliyu, for their roles in securing the cancer funds.
Dr. Magashi emphasized that the allocations reflect the federal government’s approach to reducing the burden of cancer and ensuring equitable access to life-saving interventions for all Nigerians.
“We are excited that the 2025 health budget proposal addresses critical areas for intervention, including maternal healthcare, infectious disease control, and other vital health initiatives,” Dr. Magashi added.
