The Borno State Government has disbursed N18.08 billion to over 100,000 families displaced by the recent floods that affected Maiduguri and surrounding communities.
The announcement was made during the presentation of the final report by the Flood Relief Distribution Committee to Governor Babagana Zulum at the Government House in Maiduguri.
The committee chairman, Bukar Gujibawu, provided a breakdown of the relief efforts. “A total of N18.08 billion was distributed in cash to displaced households, along with food and non-food items,” Gujibawu said. “The disaster led to significant loss of lives, destruction of public infrastructure, and the devastation of farmlands.”
According to Gujibawu, the committee received N28.2 billion in total contributions through a basket fund supported by the Federal and State Governments, corporate organizations, and individuals. Among these contributions was a N10 billion donation from the Borno State Government.
The disbursed funds included N987 million for 7,716 traders, N313 million for 814 worship centers, N213 million for 267 private schools, N89.4 million for 1,788 youths who assisted during the disaster, and N12.5 million for 22 private clinics.
Gujibawu further recommended allocating N4.45 billion for rehabilitating earth roads in flood-hit areas such as Gongulong and Old Maiduguri, and for distributing remaining items to host communities.
Governor Zulum announced plans for a permanent disaster response structure and the reconstruction of damaged road networks. “Let me commend the members of this important committee for your meticulous work. In sha Allah, posterity will judge you positively,” he stated.
The September floods caused widespread devastation, prompting donations from various organizations and individuals. The funds were used to support affected families and address infrastructure needs.
