Kano journalist Hannatu Suleiman Abba has been appointed as the Coordinator of the Vulnerable People Support and Development Initiative, marking a significant step in advocating for marginalized groups in the state.
The announcement was made during the official unveiling of the initiative in Kano.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Malam Sani Muhammad, underscored the challenges faced by vulnerable populations in the state.
“According to a survey by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Kano State has one of the highest numbers of Almajiris, vulnerable women, persons with disabilities, and out-of-school children roaming the streets in search of daily sustenance,” he stated.
He also highlighted recent developments aimed at addressing these issues. “The reassignment of a Commissioner for Women, Children, and Persons with Disabilities, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi, reflects the state’s move toward establishing a Commission for People with Disabilities and implementing a social protection policy. This presents an opportunity for advocacy,” he added.
The initiative, founded in 2022 and registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, has been active in supporting vulnerable groups through various programs. “Over the years, we have provided wheelchairs to tertiary institution students, launched empowerment schemes, distributed sanitary pads in special schools, and facilitated medical interventions. These efforts have been supported by the Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation (AMG Foundation),” Malam Sani said.
The event also saw the appointment of Alfathana Dahiru Sarina as the Deputy Coordinator in recognition of his advocacy work for persons with disabilities.
In her acceptance speech, Hannatu Suleiman Abba reaffirmed her dedication to the cause. “This appointment is a call to further action. I remain committed to ensuring that the voices of marginalized groups are heard and their needs addressed,” she said.
