Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has urged Nigeria’s broadcast regulator to extend its oversight to online radio and television platforms to curb the spread of misinformation and inflammatory content across digital media.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Yusuf made the call while addressing participants at the Africast 2025 Conference organized by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Lagos.
Represented by his Director General on Media and Publicity, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor warned that the unchecked growth of online broadcasting has fueled divisive and misleading narratives, particularly on religion and politics.
“The unregulated online broadcasting environment has become a breeding ground for misinformation and hate speech, especially on sensitive issues such as religion and politics,” Yusuf said. “It is time for the NBC to take proactive measures to ensure accountability and ethical standards in the digital media space.”
Responding, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information said the National Assembly is already considering an amendment to the NBC Act, which has passed second reading in the Senate. The proposed changes would grant the Commission legal authority to regulate online broadcasters and ensure compliance with professional and ethical standards.
Yusuf’s remarks reflect his administration’s broader push for responsible media use, digital literacy, and the protection of public interest amid Nigeria’s rapidly evolving communication landscape.
