Kano State Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Yusuf Ibrahim Kofarmata, has resigned his appointment with immediate effect, citing the prevailing political turmoil in the state.
In a resignation letter addressed to the appropriate authorities, Mr. Kofarmata expressed concern that the current political climate could undermine the independence and impartiality required of his office.
“The integrity of the State Commissioner’s role rests on the ability to act without undue influence, partisan pressure, or divided allegiance,” he said, stressing that remaining in office under the current circumstances could erode public confidence in the institution.
He added that the growing atmosphere of tension and expectations of loyalty and allegiance could create the perception—or reality—of compromised judgment, which he said was inconsistent with the ethical standards of a State Commissioner.
“My decision to step aside is taken in the interest of safeguarding the credibility of the office and preserving my personal commitment to ethical public service,” he said.
The former commissioner expressed gratitude to the Kano State Government for the opportunity to serve, noting that his tenure across various ministries allowed him to contribute to policy reforms and developmental efforts in the state.
“I remain grateful for the opportunity to have served in various ministries and for the trust placed in me during my tenure,” he said, adding that he hoped his resignation would help the institution function “without question or constraint.”
Mr. Kofarmata concluded the letter by formally requesting that his resignation be accepted as his official notice of disengagement from the Kano State Executive Council.
His resignation comes amid ongoing political realignments and tensions in Kano State, which have continued to draw public attention and debate over governance and institutional independence.
It is recalled that last year, Dr. Yusuf Kofarmata was grilled for hours by the state Anti-Corruption and Public Complaints Commission over alleged N1.5 billion foreign scholarship fraud involving 1,001 students supposedly studying in India and Kenya.
