Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar reportedly held a high-level consultative meeting with the leadership of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) at his Abuja residence over the weekend, raising political speculations ahead of the 2027 elections.
The meeting was confirmed by ADP National Chairman, Engr. Yabagi Yusuf Sani, who described the engagement as part of the party’s continuous dialogue with key democratic stakeholders.
“Earlier today, the national leadership of the ADP, led by the National Chairman, Engr. Yabagi Yusuf Sani, held a high-level consultative meeting with HE Atiku Abubakar GCON, Wazirin Adamawa, as part of its ongoing engagements with key democratic stakeholders,” Sani said in a statement issued in Abuja.
According to the ADP chairman, discussions centered on safeguarding democratic pluralism, strengthening opposition stability, and ensuring credible electoral choices for Nigerians in the 2027 elections.
He stressed the importance of preserving constitutional platforms and promoting responsible political preparedness to protect voter choice and institutional integrity.
Sani dismissed speculation that the meeting was aimed at merging parties or recruiting individuals into the ADP, emphasizing that the engagement was strictly consultative.
“ADP remains focused on institutional stability, constitutionalism, and keeping credible options open for Nigerians. Any future decisions, if and when they arise, will be taken transparently and communicated formally,” he said.
However, political analysts suggest that the timing of the meeting coincides with rumours of a possible alliance between former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso to contest the ADC presidential ticket, fueling speculation that the discussions could be part of strategic pre-election maneuvering.
