The Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, on Sunday donated N100 million to traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at Singer Market in Kano.
Barau, who represents Kano North Senatorial District, made the donation during a visit to the market following Saturday’s inferno, which destroyed goods and property worth billions of naira.
He was received by the Chairman of the Singer Market Development Association, Alhaji Junaidu Zakari, alongside hundreds of affected traders.
Speaking during the visit, the Deputy Senate President said the financial support was meant to cushion the devastating impact of the fire on victims whose sources of livelihood were destroyed.
“This fire outbreak and the enormous losses recorded have affected all of us. In fact, it affects the entire Kano people and the country at large. Commerce is the mainstay of Kano, so we are deeply touched by this incident,” he said.
Barau also pledged to facilitate the provision of a modern fire-control facility in the market to prevent future occurrences and improve emergency response.
Earlier, Zakari said the market had suffered two major fire incidents in recent times, with losses estimated at over N5bn.
He thanked the Deputy Senate President for the visit and financial assistance.
“We are proud to have him in Kano and appreciate all the support he has given to us,” Zakari said.
