The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast dust haze and cloudy conditions across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday, with occasional thunderstorms in parts of the country.
In its weather outlook released Sunday in Abuja, NiMet said slight dust haze is expected across the northern region on Monday, with states like Borno and Yobe likely to experience moderate dust haze and horizontal visibility ranging from 2km to 5km.
“For the North central region, slight dust haze is expected across the region throughout the forecast period,” NiMet stated.
It added that the southern region will experience a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine, along with slim chances of morning thunderstorms over parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom.
“Later in the day, thunderstorms with light rains are anticipated over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Lagos, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom,” the agency said.
NiMet further predicted moderate dust haze over the northern region on Tuesday, with visibility ranging between 2km and 5km. Slight dust haze will continue across the North central region, while the southern region is expected to have a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine.
Morning thunderstorms are likely over Akwa Ibom and Cross River, followed by thunderstorms with light rains later in Lagos, Oyo, Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom.
On Wednesday, NiMet warned of thick dust haze across both the northern and North central regions, while the southern region is expected to remain cloudy with intervals of sunshine.
Morning thunderstorms may occur over Cross River and Akwa Ibom, with thunderstorms and light rains later in Bayelsa, Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom.
The agency urged the public to take precautions, particularly in the northern and North central regions, as well as the inland southern states.
“People with asthmatic conditions and other respiratory issues should be cautious of the weather condition. Driving under rain should be with caution. Airline operators are advised to get airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective planning in their operations,” it said.
