Bayero University Kano (BUK) has launched an investigation into allegations that one of its students is involved in online impersonation and financial scams.
The announcement was made on Wednesday in a statement by the University’s Director of Public Affairs, Lamara Garba, on behalf of the Registrar.
“The Management of Bayero University Kano has taken note of allegations currently circulating in public commentary and on social media, linking a person reported to be a student of the University to acts of online impersonation and financial misconduct.
“The Management wishes to state that Bayero University Kano maintains strict standards of conduct, discipline, and character for all students throughout the duration of their studies,” the statement said.
It added that any conduct capable of bringing the University’s name and reputation into disrepute is treated with the utmost seriousness.
“The University also wishes to emphasise that the personal actions of any individual student do not represent the values or character of Bayero University Kano as an institution.
“In view of the allegations, the University has commenced a preliminary inquiry to ascertain the facts surrounding the matter. The appropriate University authorities are reviewing the issue in line with the institution’s established rules and disciplinary procedures governing student conduct,” the statement read.
The Management, however, commended the public-spirited efforts of Prof. Farooq Kperogi and many other well-meaning individuals who, often quietly and without public recognition, extend financial support to students in need by assisting with registration fees and other educational expenses.
“Such acts of generosity continue to play an important role in expanding access to education and supporting deserving students,” the statement noted.
The University assured the public that, should the allegations be substantiated, appropriate disciplinary action would be taken in accordance with its regulations and applicable laws.
“Members of the public are kindly urged to allow the investigative process to take its course while refraining from speculation or the circulation of unverified information,” the statement added.
