The Kano State Government has dismissed claims that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) out of fear of losing a second-term ticket under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the government described the allegation, reportedly made by former Commissioner for Investment, Commerce and Industry, Shehu Wada Sagagi, as “false and baseless.”
Waiya said, “My attention has been drawn to a misleading and unfounded statement credited to the immediate past Commissioner for Investment, Commerce and Industry, Shehu Wada Sagagi, alleging that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf defected to the APC out of fear of being denied the opportunity to contest for a second term under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) platform.”
The commissioner stressed that the claim was “a deliberate attempt to misinform the public and distort the genuine intentions behind the governor’s political realignment.”
According to him, the governor’s decision to realign politically was taken in the interest of the state.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the decision of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to realign politically was taken in the overriding interest of peace, unity, and sustainable development of Kano State,” Waiya said.
He added that the move was “a strategic and well-considered” step aimed at consolidating progress and ensuring inclusive governance.
“It is a strategic and well-considered move aimed at consolidating progress, fostering stronger collaboration, and ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach all citizens and residents without marginalisation,” he added.
Waiya further dismissed the insinuation that the governor acted out of fear, noting that Yusuf enjoys strong political support across the state.
“The insinuation that the governor acted out of fear of not securing a second-term ticket is not only misleading but also ignores his strong political standing, wide acceptance, and proven track record of service delivery across the state,” he said.
He maintained that the governor remains committed to his administration’s agenda.
“The governor remains focused on the ‘Kano First’ agenda, which prioritises the welfare of the people, infrastructural development, economic growth, and social stability,” the statement noted.
The commissioner urged the public to ignore Sagagi’s claims, insisting that they do not reflect the reality on the ground.
“We therefore urge the public to disregard the statement credited to Shehu Wada Sagagi, as it does not reflect the true state of affairs,” he said.
Waiya reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and development, adding that the administration would not be distracted.
“The present administration will not be distracted by baseless claims and the sentiments of unpatriotic elements, but will continue to work tirelessly to deliver on its mandate to the good people of Kano State,” he stated.
