Former Kano State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Mu’azu Magaji, has weighed in on the ongoing debate over the choice of a deputy governor in the state, suggesting that both Engr. Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum are strong contenders for the position.
Magaji made the remarks on Sunday in a post on his verified Facebook page titled “On Kano Deputy Governors Pick: Here is my take!”
He argued that Kano Central, where Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf hails from, should not produce the deputy governor, noting that both Kano North and Kano South have credible candidates for the role.
According to him, “Kano North has Engr. Rabiu Suleiman Bichi as a credible candidate for the position, while Kano South also has Rt. Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum as a strong candidate for the position.”
He added that either of the two, if selected, would strengthen the political balance of the administration and improve the chances of the ruling party in future elections.
Magaji, however, stressed that the final decision rests solely with the governor.
“My suggestion is that His Excellency ultimately decides who becomes his deputy because it is his sole prerogative as the Governor,” he wrote.
He further proposed what he described as a compensatory arrangement for the candidate not selected, suggesting that such a person could be considered for a ministerial appointment at the federal level.
“But whoever becomes the deputy, the other should be nominated as minister to replace one of our ministers in Abuja,” he added.
The former commissioner also called for the political integration of former governorship candidate, Murtala Garo, urging that he be given a strategic appointment to strengthen internal party unity.
He further commented on past political developments involving Garo, while urging greater inclusiveness going forward.
Magaji also weighed in on the interest of the Kano State House of Assembly Speaker in the deputy governorship position, describing it as potentially a step down from his current role.
“Whoever the Governor decides… the first three stakeholders to be informed and carried along are the two senators from Kano North and Kano South, and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly,” he said.
He added that the Speaker, who is reportedly interested in the position, currently holds a more strategic role in governance partnership than that of a deputy governor.
Magaji concluded by expressing hope that the final decision would strengthen both the ruling party and governance in Kano State, saying he wished “everything works out for our party and for the best of Kano and its people.”
