The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) has denied reports circulating on social media alleging that it asked Muslims to embark on prayers for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement issued on Monday by its Secretary-General, Nafiu Baba Ahmad, the Council described the claim as false, misleading and lacking any basis.
The Council said it never issued such a directive and urged the public, particularly members of the Muslim Ummah and the media, to disregard the reports and rely only on its official channels of communication.
“The fabrications are clearly intended to drag the Council into partisan political contestation and undermine national stability,” the statement said.
While distancing itself from the prayer call, the SCSN reiterated its earlier position on the INEC Chairman, insisting that he lacks the neutrality expected of his office and should either resign or be removed.
According to the Council, its position is based on concerns over actions and dispositions it believes suggest bias against Islam and Muslims, referencing a widely circulated legal brief.
It noted that such alleged conduct falls short of the neutrality, integrity and patriotism required of a public official occupying a sensitive national position.
The Council further emphasised that it remains a non-partisan religious body committed to justice, equity and peaceful coexistence.
It also cautioned against attempts to drag it into political matters.
“The Council will not allow itself to be drawn into the murky waters of partisan politics,” it added.
The SCSN reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a just society where citizens can freely practise their religion without fear or discrimination.
