The Kano State Accountability Forum on Education (K-SAFE) has lauded the Executive Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for approving N4.45 billion for the payment of examination fees for 150,000 students across the state.
The commendation was contained in a statement signed by the Co-Chair of K-SAFE, Auwalu Halilu, who described the intervention as timely and impactful.
According to the statement, the fund will cover candidates sitting for National Examinations Council (NECO), National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), and National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) examinations.
K-SAFE said the governor’s decision demonstrates a strong commitment to improving access to education and supporting students’ academic aspirations.
“This bold and people-centered decision demonstrates Your Excellency’s unwavering commitment to improving access to education, promoting equity, and supporting the academic aspirations of young people in Kano State,” the statement read.
The group noted that the intervention would ease the financial burden on thousands of families, especially amid prevailing economic challenges.
“By removing the financial burden of examination fees from thousands of families, the Kano State Government has not only safeguarded the future of these students but has also strengthened public confidence in the government’s dedication to educational development and social inclusion,” it added.
K-SAFE further stated that the initiative would help reduce school dropouts, prevent delays in academic progression, and improve learning outcomes.
“Your Excellency’s intervention comes at a critical time when many households are facing economic challenges, and the inability to pay examination fees often results in school dropouts, delayed progression, or loss of educational opportunities,” the statement said.
The forum also highlighted that the inclusion of NECO, NABTEB, and NBAIS candidates reflects an inclusive approach that accommodates conventional, technical, and Islamic education systems.
“It also aligns strongly with national and global education priorities aimed at ensuring that no child is left behind due to financial constraints,” it noted.
While commending the governor’s leadership, the group urged the state government to sustain investment in the education sector.
“We respectfully encourage the continuation of such transformative policies and sustained investment in education, including support for teaching and learning materials, school infrastructure, teacher development, and inclusive education programmes,” the statement added.
K-SAFE reaffirmed its appreciation to the Kano State Government, describing the intervention as a “historic” step towards strengthening human capital development and securing a better future for students in the state.
