A Kano State High Court has been urged to restrain the Kano State House of Assembly from screening Murtala Garo for the position of deputy governor, Daily Nigerian reports.
This follows a fresh legal action challenging the process of filling the vacant deputy governor slot in the state.
Kano Times reports that Garo was shortlisted alongside a former Speaker of the State Assembly, Kabiru Rurum, and the Managing Director of Hadejia-Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, Rabiu Bichi, by the Ganduje-Barau APC faction.
However, Governor Abba Yusuf is yet to forward any official nomination to the Assembly, even as the contenders intensify lobbying for the position.
In a letter dated April 15, 2026, addressed to the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Suleiman Mohammed & Co., solicitors to Kuliyya Muhammad Salihu and two others, disclosed that a suit has already been filed before the court over the matter.
The lawyers noted that the case, marked K/360/2026, is pending before the Kano State High Court.
According to them, the issue has become sub judice, urging the Assembly to suspend any planned screening of Garo pending the determination of the suit.
They warned that proceeding with the screening could undermine the judicial process.
The letter, also copied to the Clerk of the House, was acknowledged by the Kano State House of Assembly.
The development comes amid ongoing political tension surrounding the deputy governor position, with consultations and lobbying intensifying across different camps.
