The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Kano Strategic Command, has arrested six suspected drug dealers during a raid around the old site of Bayero University Kano, BUK.
The agency also dismantled several drug joints allegedly used for the sale and consumption of illicit substances within and around the area.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics, Sadiq Maigatari.
According to the statement, the operation was carried out under the leadership of the Kano Strategic Commander, CN DY Lawal, following complaints from the management of Bayero University over rising drug-related activities around the institution.
Maigatari said the raid was conducted under “Operation Sharar Mafaka,” aimed at clearing suspected criminal hideouts and ensuring a safer environment for students and residents.
“The NDLEA Kano Strategic Command under the leadership of CN DY Lawal has conducted a successful raid of the Bayero University Kano old site area, arresting six trespassers involved in illicit drug activities and dismantling several drug joints,” he said.
He added that the suspects were apprehended while various items linked to the illegal activities were seized and destroyed.
“Acting on a formal complaint from the management of Bayero University, the command moved swiftly under ‘Operation Sharar Mafaka’ to dislodge individuals who had been using parts of the university precincts and adjacent areas for the trading and consumption of illicit substances,” Maigatari stated.
The NDLEA spokesperson noted that the operation underscored the agency’s commitment to maintaining a drug-free environment within educational institutions.
“This action demonstrates our commitment to ensuring a drug-free environment where students, staff and their families can live and work in safety. We will never relent. We will continue to dislodge and occupy all drug joints under Operation Sharar Mafaka,” he added.
The command also commended the management of Bayero University for cooperating with security agencies and promptly reporting the activities of suspected drug dealers.
The agency warned against using educational institutions and public facilities as centres for drug trafficking and consumption, stressing that such acts would not be tolerated.
NDLEA further urged members of the public to continue providing useful information that would help security agencies identify and dismantle drug hideouts across Kano State.
