The management of Gombe State University has confirmed the discovery of a day-old baby boy at one of its female hostels.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, was described by the institution as unfortunate, with investigations already underway to identify those responsible.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Napthali Hadu, confirmed the development during a telephone interview.
“I also heard about the unfortunate incident today at the school. I will get back to you as soon as I gather more details,” he said.
Hadu noted that security agencies had commenced investigations to uncover the perpetrator and ensure appropriate action is taken.
According to him, security operatives are working to fish out those behind the incident.
The newborn has been taken to Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe for medical attention.
Meanwhile, the university management has placed the female hostel under restriction pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.
Kano Times reports that cases of abandoned newborns have been recorded in the area in recent years, including a similar incident in 2023.
