The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Kano State, Mohammed Sani Abacha, has lost his bid to secure the party’s ticket for the 2027 governorship election.
Abacha, the eldest son of the late former Head of State, Sani Abacha, was defeated by Muhammad Bello Dalhatu during the party’s primary election.
The Chairman of the PDP Governorship Primary Election Committee, Umar Danjani Hadejia, announced the result shortly after the exercise, describing the process as peaceful and hitch-free.
According to him, Dalhatu secured 2,233 votes to emerge the winner of the primary, while Abacha polled 749 votes to finish second.
Hadejia said the election was conducted in line with the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, and the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“Having scored the highest number of valid votes cast, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Dalhatu is hereby declared the winner of the PDP gubernatorial primary election and is consequently returned as the party’s gubernatorial candidate for Kano State.
“The committee commends all aspirants, delegates, party officials, security agencies, and stakeholders for their maturity, cooperation, and commitment throughout the exercise. We call on all party members to unite and work collectively toward the success of the party in the forthcoming elections,” he said.
Abacha had earlier contested for the PDP governorship ticket in 2023 but lost to Sadiq Aminu Wali after a prolonged legal tussle involving parallel factions within the party.
He also contested the 2019 Kano governorship election as the sole candidate of the Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA).
