In the ever-changing landscape of Kano politics, where loyalty is often tested and political alliances shift like desert sands, few personalities have remained as consistent, composed and resilient as Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, fondly known among associates and admirers as “Damo Sarkin Hakuri.”
His political journey tells the story of a man shaped by discipline, patience, courage and an enduring commitment to public service. From the classroom to the corridors of political power, Aminu Gwarzo has built a reputation founded on humility, inclusiveness and political steadfastness.
Born on November 6, 1960, in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo began life with a strong educational background. He attended Gwarzo Primary School between 1966 and 1972 before furthering his studies, earning both National Diploma and Higher National Diploma certificates from Kano State Polytechnic. His desire for learning later took him to Bayero University, Kano, where he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Policy and Administration between 2007 and 2008.
Long before politics brought him into public prominence, Gwarzo had already made his mark as a disciplined and focused administrator. He started his career as a classroom teacher in 1977 and remarkably became one of the youngest headmasters in the old Kano State in 1981. Those who worked with him during that period still remember his passion for excellence, punctuality and attention to detail.
Unlike many leaders who depend on authority to command respect, Gwarzo’s calm and simple nature naturally endeared him to people. His leadership style has consistently reflected patience, tolerance and a deep sense of responsibility. Associates often describe him as a leader who listens carefully before speaking, yet ensures that every decision serves the interest of the people.
After obtaining qualifications in Banking and Finance as well as Accountancy, he joined the civil service as a revenue officer in 1988. His years in public service further strengthened his image as a man of integrity and professionalism.
His involvement in labour union activities, particularly within the Nigeria Labour Congress and civil service unions, exposed him to grassroots mobilisation and advocacy. It was during this period that many people began to notice his leadership qualities and political potential.
Gwarzo formally joined partisan politics in the mid-1990s and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1996, he became Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government Area, a position he also held from 1999 to 2003 under the Peoples Democratic Party during the administration of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as Governor of Kano State.
His political relationship with Kwankwaso would later grow into one of the strongest alliances in Kano politics. Over the years, Gwarzo became one of the dependable pillars of the Kwankwasiyya movement, playing strategic roles in governance and political mobilisation.
During Kwankwaso’s administration, he served as Commissioner for State Affairs, where he displayed administrative competence and loyalty to government programmes and policies.
Despite spending many years in politics, Aminu Gwarzo has maintained a reputation for simplicity and modest living, avoiding flamboyance and unnecessary public display.
In 2019, he emerged as the running mate to Abba Kabir Yusuf. Although the ticket was unsuccessful at the time, their political partnership remained strong. Four years later, in the 2023 general election, the duo secured victory, making Gwarzo the Deputy Governor of Kano State.
As deputy governor, he was widely regarded as a stabilising figure within the administration. His calm approach and wealth of experience in governance played important roles in managing disagreements and coordinating government activities.
However, the political equation later changed following disagreements over party affiliation and emerging political interests within Kano’s political landscape. On March 27, 2026, Aminu Gwarzo resigned from his position as Deputy Governor following political differences with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf after the governor’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The political developments that followed once again showed Gwarzo’s resilience and consistency in difficult times. Alongside Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and other loyalists, he moved through different political alignments before eventually settling in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
For many political observers, his decision was seen not just as political calculation, but as a reflection of loyalty to long-standing ideals and relationships.
That loyalty received recognition on May 29, 2026, when the National Leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, announced Aminu Gwarzo as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 Kano governorship election.
The announcement did not come as a surprise to many within Kano’s political circles. To supporters, Gwarzo represents continuity, political experience and strong grassroots connection. To allies, he remains a dependable and disciplined figure whose years in public service have prepared him for higher responsibility.
