National leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced the emergence of Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna as the consensus candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Kano Central Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development effectively shuts out the incumbent senator representing Kano Central, Rufai Sani Hanga, who recently dumped the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the NDC.
Kwankwaso disclosed the decision in a statement posted on his official social media handle on Friday, saying the party’s choice was based on equity, fairness, loyalty, and competence.
According to him, Gawuna was selected to fly the party’s flag for Kano Central after wide consultations within the party and the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
“This decision was made in the spirit of equity, fairness, loyalty, and competence — values that remain central to our party and Kwankwasiyya’s progress and unity,” Kwankwaso stated.
The former governor also expressed optimism about the party’s chances in the forthcoming elections and prayed for a peaceful affirmation exercise.
“As we proceed with today’s affirmation exercise, I pray for a seamless, peaceful, and successful process. May Almighty Allah grant us resounding victory in the forthcoming elections,” he added.
Gawuna served as Deputy Governor of Kano State under former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and was the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the 2023 election.
He also served as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) before resigning and aligning with Kwankwaso in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) prior to his movement to the NDC.
Kwankwaso also announced Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo as the party’s governorship candidate for Kano State ahead of the 2027 elections.
