The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has called for the immediate release of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, describing him as a “prisoner of conscience.”
The party made the demand in a communiqué issued at the end of its 101st National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting held in Abuja on Saturday.
The communiqué, signed by the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the NEC unanimously resolved that El-Rufai was a victim of political persecution and should be freed without delay.
“The NEC recognises Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai as a prisoner of conscience and calls for his immediate release,” the statement read.
The party also used the meeting to ratify the outcome of its recently conducted primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the communiqué, the NEC approved the results of primaries conducted for State Houses of Assembly, National Assembly, governorship and presidential elections across the country, except those with pending appeals as of May 29, 2026, and contests yet to be concluded.
“NEC approved the results of all recently conducted primaries for State Houses of Assembly, the National Assembly, State Governors, and the Presidential elections; except those with pending appeals as at May 29, 2026, and those yet to be concluded,” the party stated.
The NEC further approved a 12-month extension of the tenure of the National Working Committee, NWC, to enable the current leadership oversee the party’s affairs ahead of the 2027 elections.
“NEC approved the extension of the tenure of the National Working Committee (NWC) for a period of 12 months from the expiry of their current tenure,” the communiqué added.
In the same vein, the party approved the constitution of caretaker committees at the zonal, state, local government and ward levels for a period of one year.
“NEC approved the constitution of the Caretaker Committees at the Zonal, State, Local Government and Wards for a period of 12 months,” the statement said.
The decisions were part of efforts by the party to strengthen its internal structures and position itself ahead of the next general elections.
The NEC meeting came shortly after the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark, urged members to remain united and work towards presenting the ADC as a credible alternative for Nigerians.
Mark said Nigerians were looking for a political platform capable of addressing the country’s economic and security challenges, urging party members not to disappoint the electorate.
