Kano Hisbah Court Faces Bias Allegations Over Girl’s Detention

A controversy has erupted in Kano State following allegations of bias, abuse of authority and denial of justice in the handling of a case involving the detention of a young girl by a Hisbah Court.

The development has sparked public concern, with residents and legal observers calling for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the girl’s detention.

According to reports, the case stemmed from a dispute between two women, which later attracted the attention of law enforcement authorities.

Sources familiar with the matter alleged that although efforts were being made by the parties to resolve the dispute amicably, the case was pursued against one of the parties.

The reports further alleged that a former judge, Idris Yahya, popularly known as “Mai Hannu Daya,” may have influenced the handling of the matter.

According to the allegations, arrangements were allegedly made before the girl’s appearance in court to ensure that she would be remanded in custody.

The claims have raised concerns among members of the public over the possibility of undue influence in the judicial process.

Family members of the girl alleged that she was remanded in a correctional facility shortly after being arraigned before the Hisbah Court despite her age.

They further claimed that several attempts to secure her release on bail were unsuccessful as applications for bail were allegedly denied.

According to the family, after the court resumed sitting following a weekend break, the girl was returned to custody and spent additional days in detention before she was eventually granted bail.

The family described the development as distressing, insisting that the treatment meted out to the girl was excessive considering the nature of the dispute.

Legal observers have warned that if the allegations are substantiated, the case could further erode public confidence in the justice system.

They argued that the perception that influential individuals can influence judicial outcomes while ordinary citizens are denied fair treatment poses a serious threat to the rule of law.

Some commentators also noted that the matter goes beyond a dispute between individuals and raises broader questions about the credibility of institutions responsible for protecting citizens’ rights.

They stressed the need for a transparent investigation to determine whether due process was followed and whether the girl’s detention complied with established legal procedures.

Consequently, legal analysts and concerned residents have called on the Kano State Government and relevant judicial authorities to conduct an independent probe into the allegations.

According to them, the public deserves clarity on the circumstances surrounding the case, while anyone found to have abused public office, manipulated judicial processes or violated the rights of vulnerable persons should be held accountable in accordance with the law.

As of the time of filing this report, the individuals mentioned in the allegations had not publicly responded to the claims.
