The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former spokesperson of the Nigerian military, while in the custody of bandits.
The government announced the development in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, on behalf of the state government.
According to the statement, the retired army general died in captivity despite efforts by the state government and security agencies to secure his release.
“The Katsina State Government, with a heavy heart and deep sense of loss, wishes to inform the general public of the tragic passing of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar,” the statement said.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various Security Agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy.”
The government said Mr Abubakar died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension.
“The deceased Retired General died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” the statement added.
The government described the incident as a significant loss to Katsina State and Nigeria.
“His abduction and subsequent death are not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but a monumental loss to the entire country,” the statement noted.
Governor Dikko Radda extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and Nigerians over the incident.
According to the statement, the governor described the development as “a dark moment” and stressed the need for greater collaboration in addressing insecurity.
“The Governor has described this incident as a ‘dark moment’ and a reminder of the urgent need for a collective and intensified front against the criminal elements threatening the peace of our communities,” it said.
The state government also reiterated its commitment to combating banditry and ensuring that those responsible for the abduction are brought to justice.
“The Katsina State Government remains committed to working with the Federal Government and security forces to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice.
“We assure the citizens of Katsina State that our resolve to eliminate banditry and ensure the safety of all residents remains unshaken,” the statement added.
The government prayed for the repose of the late general’s soul and urged residents to continue supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace and security across the state.
