The Kano State Government has unveiled a Digital Multimedia Department under the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs as part of efforts to improve government communication and public engagement through digital platforms.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, announced this during the unveiling and inauguration ceremony held on Monday at the ministry’s headquarters in the Audu Bako Secretariat, Kano.
Waiya said the department was created to address communication gaps between the government and citizens and strengthen the dissemination of official information.
According to him, the decision followed consultations and institutional assessments that identified the need for a dedicated structure to document government programmes, publicise policies and counter misinformation.
“The Digital Multimedia Department represents our response to the growing demand for modern, efficient and professional government communication. It will ensure that the voice of government remains visible, accessible and authoritative across all communication platforms,” he said.
He explained that the department would serve as a hub for content creation, digital engagement, documentation of government activities, online publishing and media management.
The commissioner also said the department was established with the approval of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, adding that it aligns with the administration’s efforts to improve communication with residents.
“The new department was conceived following extensive consultations and institutional assessments which revealed the urgent need for a dedicated structure to effectively document government programmes, showcase achievements, disseminate policies and combat misinformation through timely and credible official communication,” Waiya stated.
The event also featured the inauguration of the Forum of Directors of Public Enlightenment and Public Relations Officers drawn from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) across the state.
According to the commissioner, the forum was established to improve coordination, collaboration and information sharing among public communication officers in the state.
To support the activities of the forum, Waiya announced a donation of N1 million.
In separate goodwill messages, communication scholars from Bayero University Kano, media stakeholders and officials of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) commended the establishment of the Digital Multimedia Department, saying it would contribute to improving information dissemination and digital communication in the state.
