Troops Recover RPGs, IEDs From Lakurawa Terrorists in Kebbi

Troops of the Nigerian Army have recovered high-calibre weapons and improvised explosive devices, IEDs, from suspected Lakurawa terrorists following a fierce gun battle in Kebbi State.

The Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.

According to Osoba, the operation was carried out on June 14 in the Dogon Daji general area of Dandi Local Government Area of the state as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate terrorists and other criminal elements operating in the North-West region.

He said the troops engaged the terrorists in a fierce firefight, overwhelming them with superior firepower and forcing them to abandon their camp and flee.

“During the operation, the gallant troops brought superior firepower to bear on the Lakurawa Terrorist Group, decisively overwhelming the terrorists and forcing them to flee.

“A follow-on aggressive pursuit along the terrorists’ withdrawal routes led to the recovery of a large cache of arms, explosives and logistics equipment abandoned by the fleeing elements,” he stated.

Osoba said items recovered during the operation included Rocket-Propelled Grenade, RPG, launch tubes, several RPG warheads, multiple improvised explosive devices, two motorcycles used by the terrorists for mobility, battery chargers and other personal belongings.

The army spokesman further disclosed that no casualty was recorded among the troops during the operation.

He added that the successful operation underscores the commitment of Operation Fansan Yamma and other security agencies to sustaining the fight against terrorism, banditry and other forms of criminality in the region.

“The operation demonstrates the resolve of the Joint Task Force North-West, Operation Fansan Yamma, to continue taking the fight to terrorist and bandit groups until lasting peace is restored across the region,” he added.
