The Publisher of Daily Nigerian, Jaafar Jaafar, has described the nomination of Mustapha Kwankwaso as the deputy governorship candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State as a poor choice, insisting that the nominee lacks the qualities required for the office.
Jaafar stated this in a Facebook post on Thursday while reacting to the emergence of Mustapha, the eldest son of former Kano State Governor and NDC Deputy Presidential Candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as the party’s running mate.
According to the journalist, the widespread admiration enjoyed by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is not based on his physical appearance but on his leadership qualities and record of public service.
“If people admired Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso solely because of his appearance, then Mustapha would be the one receiving that admiration, since the two bear a resemblance to each other,” Jaafar wrote.
“However, what earns Kwankwaso the respect and support of many people is his competence, experience, integrity, and commitment to the welfare of the people. These are qualities that Mustapha has yet to demonstrate.”
Jaafar also dismissed suggestions that his criticism was politically motivated, maintaining that his position was based on principle rather than personal interest.
“I am guided by my conscience, not by convenience. Mustapha is ill-suited for the office of deputy governor and lacks the qualities expected of someone seeking such a position,” he stated.
Mustapha Kwankwaso was nominated as the NDC deputy governorship candidate on Monday, months after resigning from his position as Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development.
His nomination has since sparked debate within political circles, with some critics alleging that the decision reflects nepotism and could affect the party’s chances in the 2027 general elections.
However, supporters of the nomination have argued that Mustapha should be judged on his personal capacity and performance rather than on his family background.
