The Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, has said the Federal Government will review the N70,000 national minimum wage when the time comes, in response to the country’s prevailing economic realities.
Gbajabiamila stated this on Friday at the Good Governance Summit 2026 organised by the Working People United (WoPU) in Abuja.
He acknowledged that while the N70,000 minimum wage approved in 2024 marked a significant improvement, the current economic situation has diminished its value.
“The N70,000 wage, which was a milestone in 2024, must be honestly reassessed against today’s realities. This administration will approach that endeavour not as an adversary of labour, but as a partner,” he said.
According to him, President Bola Tinubu had reduced the statutory review period for the minimum wage from five years to three years to ensure workers’ salaries keep pace with economic realities.
He noted that although the administration had faced significant challenges since assuming office, it remained committed to improving the welfare of Nigerian workers.
Also speaking, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, said good governance should be measured by the extent to which government policies improve the lives of workers.
“Governance is not merely about policies written in documents or programmes announced from government offices. The true measure of governance is the extent to which policies translate into improved livelihoods, increased productivity, social protection, economic opportunities and dignity for the working people,” Dingyadi said.
In his remarks, the National Coordinator of WoPU, Williams Akporeha, stressed that no nation could achieve meaningful development without a productive workforce.
“There is no economy without the working people, there is no productivity without the working people, and there is no national development,” he said.
