The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a major overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing sweeping reforms aimed at transforming the scheme into a skills-driven and productivity-focused institution.
The approval was granted during Monday’s FEC meeting in Abuja.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed that the reforms include a civilian-led operational structure for the NYSC, while the military will continue to provide security for corps members.
According to him, the reforms will also introduce a technology-driven call-up process, risk-sensitive deployment, a redesigned orientation camp programme focused on leadership, entrepreneurship and digital skills, as well as skills-based primary assignments.
“We are transforming the Scheme into a platform that not only unites Nigeria but also equips our young people with the skills, experience and opportunities they need to thrive in a fast-changing world,” Olawande said.
He added that the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development have been directed to amend the NYSC Act and other relevant regulations to give legal backing to the reforms.
The minister described the changes as the first comprehensive review of the NYSC since its establishment 53 years ago, noting that they align with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of building a $1 trillion economy.
