The Presidency has revealed how an alleged fraudster, Adeniyi Adeyemi, created a fake government agency, occupied an office at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja and allegedly used forged documents to impersonate a top government official.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Adeyemi would be arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on July 27, 2026, on an eight-count charge bordering on forgery, impersonation and obtaining by false pretence.
According to the Presidency, Adeyemi allegedly forged an appointment letter from the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and presented himself as the Director-General of a non-existent agency known as the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council.
Quoting a petition by Gbajabiamila to security agencies, the statement said, “The fake documents, bearing falsified signatures, reference and folio numbers, and seals, have been used to claim leadership appointments to non-existent entities.”
The Presidency said the petition, submitted to the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, DSS, in October 2025, led to an investigation and Adeyemi’s arrest at his office within the Federal Secretariat Complex in Abuja.
Police investigations allegedly uncovered 34 bank accounts linked to the suspect, including nine accounts opened in the names of fictitious government agencies.
Investigators also alleged that Adeyemi fraudulently opened an account with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, using forged government documents, although the Presidency said no public funds were deposited into the account.
Citing the police investigation report, the statement added: “The act of the suspect constitutes criminal forgery, impersonation and obtaining by false pretence, thereby bringing the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President and the Presidency to disrepute before the public and international community.”
The Presidency further disclosed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs raised concerns after Adeyemi allegedly invited foreign diplomats to a meeting at a hotel in Abuja without informing the ministry.
According to the statement, the ministry described the action as a violation of established diplomatic procedures.
It also said several government institutions, including the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, and the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, sought clarification over Adeyemi’s claimed appointment.
Responding to the inquiries, Gbajabiamila denied any connection with the suspect or the purported agency.
“Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi… is unknown to any office, nor do we have any dealings with the said council,” the Chief of Staff was quoted as saying.
The Presidency also alleged that Adeyemi had made similar false claims in 2016 by presenting himself as a representative of a purported international youth organisation, which it said was later disowned by the United Nations.
It urged politicians and members of the public to disregard any claims made by Adeyemi pending the conclusion of his trial.
“Politicians and members of the public… are advised to await the trial of Adeyemi and his accomplices, as well as the court’s judgement,” the statement added.
