No fewer than 10 members of the same family have been killed after gunmen attacked Wereng Camp in Kum village, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack, which reportedly occurred between 11pm on Saturday and 1am on Sunday, was confirmed by the President of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association, Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, and the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong.
The assailants were said to have fled into nearby rocks and bushes after the attack.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Sunday, Mwantiri alleged that the attackers were Fulani militias who stormed the community after residents had gone to bed, opened fire indiscriminately, killed several people and injured others.
He said, “Intelligence reliably given out by residents has it that armed killer Fulani militias attacked the Wereng-Camp in Kum village of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State and killed ten members of one family.”
Also commenting on the incident, Tengwong described the attack as one of the deadliest in recent times.
He wrote, “Following the attack on Wereng-Camp and Kum villages of Riyom LGA by bandits and terrorist gangs from Fass area, one of the deadly terrorist attacks in recent times, ten people of one family are reported to have been gruesomely murdered while a village head battles life-threatening injuries he sustained as a result of the coordinated attacks that lasted for over three hours from 10 pm to 1 am. More details will be released soon.”
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies and the Plateau State Government had yet to officially comment on the incident.
