President Bola Tinubu will attend and address world leaders at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly scheduled to hold in New York, United States, in September.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, disclosed this on Wednesday after a meeting with the President at the State House in Abuja.
According to Ibrahim, Tinubu confirmed his participation after approving Nigeria’s preparations for the annual global gathering.
“The President has given us his word. He will attend the UN General Assembly this September,” the ambassador said.
He explained that Tinubu would participate in several high-level side events on energy, education and hospital management during the week-long event.
Ibrahim added that the President would use the platform to present Nigeria’s economic and governance reforms to the international community and engage world leaders on regional security challenges.
He said Tinubu would advocate stronger border policing across West Africa to address growing security threats linked to porous borders.
According to him, Nigeria is already working with the United Nations on a regional border policing initiative and will seek wider international support for the programme during the Assembly.
Tinubu attended the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly in 2023, while Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria at the 79th and 80th sessions.
The 81st Session of the UN General Assembly is scheduled to open on September 8, while the General Debate, where heads of state and government will deliver their national statements, will hold from September 22 to 28.
The annual gathering brings together world leaders to discuss key global issues, including climate change, sustainable development, international peace and security.
