The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has elected Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, as its next president after she emerged winner of the association’s national election.
Badejo-Okusanya secured 12,317 votes to defeat her two challengers in the 24-hour electronic poll, which ended on Sunday morning.
According to results published on the Electoral Committee of the NBA, ECNBA, live dashboard, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, came second with 7,934 votes, while Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, polled 5,855 votes.
A total of 26,184 votes were cast out of the 82,172 registered voters, representing a voter turnout of 31.86 percent. However, the ECNBA had yet to formally announce the results as of the time of filing this report.
With her victory, Badejo-Okusanya will become the 33rd president of the NBA and only the second woman to lead the association after Priscilla Kuye, who served as president between 1991 and 1992.
The new NBA national officers are expected to be inaugurated during the association’s Annual General Conference scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, from August 21 to 28, when the outgoing president, Afam Osigwe, will hand over to the new leadership.
The election was preceded by controversies, including a delayed commencement of voting after the ECNBA said the electronic voting platform suffered a cyberattack.
There were also legal disputes and concerns over the credibility of the voters’ register before the election eventually held on Saturday.
