Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has said the state is ready for the establishment of state police, insisting that it has the institutional capacity, manpower and political will to operate the security outfit.
Yusuf stated this on Wednesday while inaugurating the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking at the Government House in Kano.
His position was contained in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
The governor said state police would complement, rather than replace, the Nigeria Police Force in addressing the country’s security challenges.
According to him, both policing structures should work together to protect lives and property, improve intelligence gathering, enhance rapid response to security threats and promote peaceful coexistence.
“Kano State is fully prepared for the establishment of state police.
“We have the institutional capacity, human resources and political will to establish and sustain an effective state police system once the necessary constitutional and legal frameworks are put in place,” Yusuf said.
He added that the creation of state police would strengthen community policing and boost public confidence in law enforcement.
“State police should not be seen as competing with the Nigeria Police Force. Rather, both institutions should complement one another in safeguarding lives and property, maintaining law and order, and responding more effectively to security challenges within our communities,” the governor said.
Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting lawful initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and creating a safer environment for residents.
He said the inauguration of the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking was a demonstration of the government’s commitment to tackling the growing menace of drug abuse through stronger collaboration among security agencies and other stakeholders.
The governor charged members of the task force to discharge their responsibilities with professionalism, dedication and integrity.
“The fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking requires sustained commitment, effective inter-agency collaboration and the active support of all stakeholders.
“I urge members of this task force to discharge their responsibilities with diligence and integrity,” he added.
