The Kano State Government has said it is planning reforms in vehicle licensing through a strengthened partnership between the Kano State Internal Revenue Service and the Kano State Vehicle Inspection Office to improve service delivery and boost internally generated revenue.
The Executive Chairman of KIRS, Bashir Yusuf Maitama, disclosed this on Monday while receiving officials of the Kano State Road Traffic Department under the Ministry of Transportation during a courtesy visit.
The delegation visited the revenue agency to congratulate Maitama on his appointment and explore ways of strengthening collaboration in revenue administration, particularly in vehicle licensing and regulatory compliance.
Speaking during the meeting, Maitama said the state government was committed to introducing practical and innovative measures to enhance internally generated revenue while making vehicle licensing services more efficient for residents.
He said KIRS would continue to work closely with relevant government agencies to ensure effective management of vehicle-related operations across the state.
Maitama noted that existing operational challenges should be identified and addressed through practical and sustainable solutions.
He also expressed concern over the growing number of vehicle owners registering and licensing their vehicles outside Kano due to the shortage of vehicle number plates.
According to him, efforts are underway to ensure the prompt release of vehicle number plates, a move he said would reduce the migration of vehicle registrations to other states and improve access to licensing services within Kano.
Also speaking, the Executive Director, Compliance and Enforcement Group at KIRS, Muhammad Abba Aliyu, called for stronger collaboration among government agencies to enable the state achieve its revenue targets.
Aliyu also raised concerns over the increasing circulation of fake vehicle number plates and forged vehicle licences in the state, describing the trend as a serious challenge that requires immediate and coordinated action by relevant stakeholders.
