Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged Nigerians to reject ethnic profiling, religious hatred, misinformation and retaliatory violence, saying national peace is a shared responsibility.
Shettima spoke on Saturday in Jos, Plateau State, at the 80th birthday celebration and public presentation of the autobiography of former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang.
According to him, sustainable development cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
“Crime has no tribe. Violence has no religion. Murder carries no mandate from any community,” he said.
The Vice President warned against blaming entire ethnic or religious groups for the actions of criminals, stressing that such narratives only deepen divisions and weaken national unity.
He described Plateau as “Nigeria in miniature,” noting that peace and stability in the state are crucial to the country’s overall development.
“A people at peace is the highest achievement of any government because peace is the soil in which every other blessing grows,” Shettima added.
He reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving security and creating an environment where every Nigerian can live and do business without fear.
Shettima also praised Jang’s contributions to national development, describing him as a leader whose legacy is defined by service and impact on humanity.
During the event, the Vice President announced the appointment of Yakubu Jang, son of the former governor, as Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia also paid glowing tributes to Jang, commending his leadership, integrity and commitment to peace.
