The Federal Government has awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of 13 police training institutions across the country to strengthen the training of new recruits into the Nigeria Police Force.
Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja at the 160th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC).
He said the rehabilitation works were expected to be completed within three weeks, ahead of the commencement of training programmes by the Nigeria Police Force.
Shettima also charged the council to sustain ongoing economic reforms until their benefits translated into jobs, increased purchasing power, stronger business confidence and improved living standards.
“There is no doubt that a serious government is measured by the matters it refuses to abandon,” he said.
The vice president said improvements in revenue, debt management, production and investment would have limited meaning if they failed to positively affect households.
“Macroeconomic progress must therefore continue its passage into jobs, purchasing power, business confidence and stronger subnational economies,” Shettima said.
The council also endorsed the Revised National Social Protection Policy (NSPP) 2026–2030 and urged states to align their policies, legislation, budgets and implementation plans with the revised framework.
The policy, presented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, provides a framework for coordinating, financing, implementing and monitoring social protection programmes nationwide.
It also proposes the establishment of a National Social Protection Council, to be chaired by the Vice President, with the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning serving as its secretariat.
Six governors, representing the six geopolitical zones, are also expected to serve as members of the council.
