NPC chairman Aminu Yusuf dies, eight months after assuming office

The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf Wushishi, has died after a brief illness.

Wushishi reportedly died on Friday, Aug. 28, with news of his death reaching Minna, the Niger State capital, around the time of the Juma’at prayer.

His death has thrown his family, associates and political circles into mourning.

Confirming the development, Wushishi’s Special Adviser on Media, Mr Stanley Nwosu, said the NPC chairman died after a brief illness.

“Yes, it is true. The NPC chairman died after a brief illness,” Nwosu said.

The Digital Rector of Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru, Amb. Ibrahim Umar Kontagora, also mourned Wushishi, describing his death as a painful loss to Kontagora Emirate, Niger State and Nigeria.

In a condolence message, Kontagora described the deceased as a distinguished personality whose contributions and service to humanity would remain part of his legacy.

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that the Digital Rector, Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru, extends his deepest condolences to the entire good people of Kontagora Emirate over the painful loss of Alhaji Aminu Yusuf Talba Wushishi, Chairman of the National Population Commission,” he said.

He added that Wushishi’s death was a great loss to his immediate family, the Kontagora Emirate, Niger State and Nigeria.

“His passing is a great loss not only to his immediate family and loved ones, but also to the people of Kontagora Emirate, Niger State, and Nigeria at large,” Kontagora said.

He prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive the deceased’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.

“At this difficult moment, we pray that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings, accepts his good deeds, grants him Aljannatul Firdaus, and gives his family, colleagues, friends, and the entire Kontagora Emirate the strength and patience to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.

Wushishi officially assumed office as Chairman of the NPC on Dec. 2, 2025.

Before his appointment, he served in various public capacities and was a former Secretary of the Niger State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He succeeded Nasir Kwarra as chairman of the commission.

Details of his funeral arrangements were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.
