Gov. Umar Namadi of Jigawa has approved the appointment of Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel Emirate.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Bala Ibrahim, announced the appointment at a news conference at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Dutse on Sunday.
Ibrahim said the appointment followed consultations with the Gumel Emirate Council and kingmakers, in line with the Jigawa State Emirate Council Law.
“His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Jigawa State, Malam Umar Namadi, has approved the appointment of Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the new Emir of Gumel,” he said.
According to him, the appointment takes immediate effect to fill the vacuum created by the death of the late Emir and ensure continuity, peace and stability in the emirate.
Ibrahim said the new Emir had previously served as the Ciroman Gumel during the reign of his late father.
He described him as an experienced and qualified successor, citing his knowledge of the traditions and challenges of the emirate.
The SSG said the governor had called on the people of Gumel Emirate to support and cooperate with the new Emir for the peace and development of the area.
“His Excellency calls on all sons and daughters of Gumel Emirate to give their maximum support and cooperation to the new Emir for the overall peace and progress of the emirate,” Ibrahim said.
He prayed for the repose of the soul of the late Emir and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening traditional institutions.
Ibrahim added that the governor would, in due course, present the staff of office to the new Emir at a ceremony befitting his status.
He urged stakeholders in the emirate to cooperate with the government to ensure a peaceful and successful ceremony.
