The Kano State Government says it plans to establish military bases in some border Local Government Areas (LGAs) to strengthen security and improve rapid response to threats.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Mohammed Taju Usman, disclosed this at a news conference in Kano on Tuesday.
He said the decision was reaffirmed during a recent meeting between Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf and chairmen of the 44 LGAs.
Usman said the initiative was agreed upon by the governor and the Chief of Defence Staff, retired Gen. Christopher Musa.
He said the proposed bases would complement the existing security architecture in the affected areas.
“The initiative is intended to strengthen security, improve rapid response to threats, protect communities and enhance lives and property across the affected Local Government Areas,” he said.
The commissioner listed Shanono, Bagwai and Tsanyawa among border LGAs affected by kidnapping, banditry and cattle rustling.
He also said the state government had approved solar-powered street lights for each of the 44 LGAs to improve public lighting and security.
Usman further disclosed plans to establish electric vehicle charging points at strategic locations in Kano metropolis as a pilot project, with plans to expand the initiative.
