The Kano State Government has inaugurated a 14-member committee, chaired by Prof. Shehu Usman Aliyu Rano of Bayero University, Kano, to oversee the handover of facilities at the School of Rural Technology and Entrepreneurship Development (SORTED), Rano, to the newly established Federal Polytechnic, Rano.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Umar Faruk Ibrahim, inaugurated the committee on Thursday at his office following approval by Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf.
In a statement issued by the SSG’s Press Secretary, Musa Tanko Muhammad, Dr Nura Haladu, Director of the School for Rural and Community Studies, Rano, was named Secretary, while Makiyu Ali Nuhu, PAS/REPA, is the Co-Secretary.
Ibrahim commended Sen. AbdulRahman Kawu Sumaila and former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, for their efforts toward establishing the Federal Polytechnic.
He described the development as “a significant milestone for Kano State and the people of the area.”
The SSG said the relocation of the Federal Polytechnic to the existing SORTED site would not mean the end of the school.
“SORTED would be relocated to Sumaila, where it would continue its operations and pursue its mandate,” he said.
Ibrahim said the committee would ensure “an orderly, transparent and seamless process” in handing over the facilities.
He said it would conduct an inventory of fixed and movable assets, determine those to be transferred to Sumaila and those to be handed over to the Federal Polytechnic, as well as conduct a census of staff and students.
The committee would also advise the government on the relocation timeline, document assets for handover and undertake other activities necessary for a smooth transition.
It is expected to submit its final report to the state government within three weeks.
Responding on behalf of the members, Rano thanked Sumaila and Rurum for their efforts toward establishing the Federal Polytechnic and commended Gov. Yusuf for his leadership and support.
He assured the government that the committee would carry out the assignment diligently and submit its report within the stipulated period.
Prof. Shehu Usman Aliyu Rano is an economics professor at Bayero University, Kano, where he has taught since 1992.
He has held various academic and administrative positions, including Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences and the School of Postgraduate Studies.
He was also a visiting scholar to the Central Bank of Nigeria and the African Economic Research Consortium and a former Director of the International Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance, Bayero University, Kano.
